Painting

I hear the sea and the sea hears me

today she’s calm,

a low moan

drowned by the sulphur-crested cockatoos

squabbling in the trees overhanging the bay

spreading seeds that carry onto dunes

gone, and she’s left in peace

I don’t think she likes them.

If you stand on the shore, alone

you know she holds secrets

the sea is a practised secret keeper

only a fool would think otherwise.
